Stand up and volunteer

Stand Up

Do you want to get involved but don't know where to start? You have the voice and power to stop violent behavior. There are hundreds of things you can do in the community and personally to stop the spread of domestic violence and homophobia, from spending 10 hours a week helping a non-violence organization to simply changing your own behavior and beliefs about violence. A whisper is better than no voice at all, and standing up slowly is better than not standing. 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted or battered in their lifetime, and violence does not only affect women. We're sure you can think of more, but you can use the ideas below as a start. Stand up. Speak out. Face violence.

Donate Materials

It isn't just about money. Many domestic violence shelters need items to keep functioning well like toiltries and food items. Download ATVP's "Wish List" here. Similarly, even though dollars help keep shelters afloat, many need volunteers just as much as monetary donations.

Join groups & do tabling

Ask us what we're currently doing to promote nonviolence and tag along! The more we have behind our name, the larger message we give. Activities and volunteering options change throughout the seasons. For instance, summer 2006 FACE set up a booth at the Moscow Farmer's Market to increase awareness through our Knitting for Nonviolence program. Contact us for more details.

Wear Messages

Support important causes by wearing pins, wristbands, and clothes that speak about non-violence. You can find them anywhere, and many are given for free at various events. In the future, FACE will have its own fundraising wristband. You can help by submitting ideas for the wristband!

Give a presentation

If your campus is hosting a domestic violence forum or presentation, join! Or you can give your own presentation for a class. Download a sample presentation to give you an idea.

Speak out

Let others know how you feel when you see violent acts. If a friend tells an offensive joke or makes fun of someone based on their race, heritage, sexual orientation, or beliefs, let them know it isn't appreciated.

Contact FACE for promotional flyers. Pin them up, give them to friends, or promote them on campus. It's the most effective way to get the word out.

Spread the word! Spread the word! Spread the word! Spread the word! Spread the word!

Don't engage in violent behavior

Understand that your own actions may promote violent behavior. Engage in the opposite of violence and hate by befriending others with similar beliefs and actions, standing up when you hear or see violent behavior, and working in your community to stop domestic violence.

Educate Yourself

Spend two hours of your time and take a domestic violence or Safe Zone training class. Find out more about the University of Idaho Safe Zone Project. Also, take an Intimate Relationships class, grab a book, or listen to a presentation on domestic violence. Not only will you learn more about violence, but you will also be more equipped to help a friend in need if a crisis occurs.

Get a friend involved

Get someone else to tag along with you at events or let them know about FACE!

Watch PSAs

Watch Public Service Announcements and see how they affect you. Do they make you sad, angry, or motivated to end violence? View the PSAs we have included under "Downloads" in Addiction, Domestic Violence, and LGBT respectively as a start, or you can visit the Coaching Boys Into Men campaign from the Family Violence Prevention Fund.

Think outside the box

You don't have to be an activist to make a difference. Be creative, seek new ideas, and have fun! Think out of the box and combine your passion with leadership to promote nonviolence and tolerance. For example, if you like cooking, team up with a group and have a bake sale to raise awareness!
