Domestic Violence

"Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."
- Isaac Asimov

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive and violent behavior that is used by a partner to gain control over another partner. The violence can be physical (e.g. hitting), sexual (e.g. marital rape), emotional (e.g. name-calling), economic (e.g. withholding one's access to funds), or psychological (e.g. threatening physical harm) actions that threat another person, including intimidation, manipulation, humiliation, intimate terrorism, and coercion. Most alarmingly, domestic violence affects children who are exposed to violence by teaching them that the behavior is acceptable or normal, and increases their risk of continuing violence into adulthood.
- United States Department of Justice, National Domestic Violence Hotline
